Morningstar’s Best Ideas for 2019 and Beyond

Morningstar’s director of personal finance, Christine Benz, will present a kind of “red meat” presentation, taking a spin through some of the tools available on Morningstar.com. Benz will discuss that Morningstar’s bottom-up research is saying about today’s markets and  which segments look particularly over and undervalued, culminating with specific investment ideas for individual stocks, mutual funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs).

You will learn…
  • Morningstar’s criteria and systems for rating stocks, mutual funds and ETFs
  • Which parts of the equity market are attractively valued and overvalued, based on Morningstar’s bottom-up research
  • Morningstar’s best ideas for fixed income, tax planning and protection from inflation

Christine Benz is director of personal finance for Morningstar and senior columnist for Morningstar.com, focusing primarily on retirement planning and investment portfolio strategies. She is the author of “30-Minute Money Solutions: A Step-by-Step Guide to Managing Your Finances” (Wiley, 2010). In addition, Benz is co-author of “Morningstar Guide to Mutual Funds: 5-Star Strategies for Success,” a national bestseller published in 2003, and author of the book’s second edition, which was published in 2005. Before assuming her current role in 2008, Benz also served as Morningstar’s director of mutual fund analysis.

How Does the Bucket
Strategy Work in
Practice?

The “bucket” approach to retirement portfolio planning is an intuitive way to organize retirement assets based on expected spending horizon, but implementation questions abound! Should the retiree spend income that the portfolio generates or reinvest it? How large should each of the buckets be, and how often should the retiree re-balance each of the buckets? Benz delves into the nitty-gritty logistics of the bucket strategy. She also shares details on her model “bucket” portfolios and discusses the results on portfolio “stress tests” from 2000–2018.

You will learn…
  • How the bucket approach can help retirees source their needed in retirement cash flows
  • How to implement a bucket regimen in practice, including tax considerations, bucket “maintenance,” and withdrawal-rate sustainability
  • How a basic bucket would have performed since 2000
