Steven Romick, CFA
Managing Partner of FPA LP, Portfolio Manager of FPA Crescent Fund

Value In The Age of Growth

Much has been made about the death of active management. Indeed, tech darlings like Amazon and Netflix have powered much of the global equity market’s returns in recent years. The goal of the FPA Crescent Fund is to generate equity-like returns over the long-term but take less risk than the stock market. Over more than two decades of investing, FPA Crescent has delivered on its stated goals. But in the face of seemingly infinite money printing, active management’s future appears less certain. Join Steve for a dynamic conversation on how to navigate the current economic environment without exposing investor capital to the myriad of risks in today’s equity and debt markets.

You will learn…
  • The current market for risk assets around the world is expensive, offering little margin of safety
  • What you don't own can be just as important as what you do own
  • Differentiated, global multi-asset strategies with an absolute return focus like FPA Crescent may provide good risk-adjusted returns over full market cycles

Steven Romick, CFA is a value investor and has managed the $14 billion FPA Crescent Fund since its inception in 1993. This Fund seeks to generate equity-like returns over the long-term take less risk than the market and avoid permanent impairment of capital. FPA Crescent has provided the best risk-adjusted returns of all allocation mutual funds according to Morningstar. Mr. Romick was awarded Morningstar’s U.S. Allocation Fund Manager of the Year (2013) and was a nominee for Morningstar’s Manager of the Decade (2009). Mr. Romick began his investment career in 1985 with Kaplan, Nathan & Co. as an analyst. In 1990 he started his own firm, Crescent Management, in order to focus on finding out-of -favor, low risk/high return investments in various parts of the capital markets. What Does the 2020 Election Mean for Your Retirement?

Elections have consequences. This has become a popular phrase in politics over the past few years, but the reality is elections do have consequences for your finances, especially your retirement. With many crucial retirement programs like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid experiencing funding issues, reform could be on the way, and the election will impact the direction of reform. The markets like certainty, and uncertainty can create volatility, so where will this election cycle leave the markets? I often describe retirement planning like trying to hit a moving target in the wind. Elections can change the way the wind blows and the course of your retirement plan.

You will learn…
  • How could the markets react to the election - do markets really prefer a blue or red wave?
  • What will the future of Social Security look like?
  • Tax and regulatory reform 2.0 - What might a change in power in DC mean for tax policy and regulatory reforms?

Jamie Hopkins, Esq., LLM, MBA, CFP, RICP is the managing director of Carson Coaching and the Director of Retirement Research for Carson Group.
